Fusion’s Prove-It Era Just Delivered a World-First Result

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Equity Insider News Commentary - General Fusion, the first publicly listed fusion energy company, has announced a world-first result on its path to commercial fusion power. Its large-scale demonstration machine, Lawson Machine 26 (“LM26”), heated plasma to more than 12 million degrees Celsius, or more than 1 keV in the units the fusion industry uses, with the Company’s practical low-speed compression approach. The temperature was measured together with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (“UKAEA”), written up in technical papers that are posted publicly and submitted for peer review, and it checks off the first of three milestones General Fusion set for LM26 when the program launched. Across deep technology, from fusion to quantum computing, space launch and advanced chipmaking, results that are measured, published and delivered against a stated plan are what build lasting credibility with investors. Active Companies from around the markets with current developments this week include: General Fusion Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: GFUZ), Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ), Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ: RKLB), and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE: TSM).

Temperature is one of the clearest signs that a fusion machine is on track, because plasma needs to get extremely hot for fusion to occur. General Fusion says only a few fusion companies have reached 1 keV, all using other approaches, and that LM26 is the first fusion machine in the world to get there with practical low-speed compression. In the Company’s words, the achievement is “a key step toward the Company’s ultimate commercial approach.”

General Fusion Achieves World-First 1 keV Electron Temperature Milestone on its Path to Commercial Fusion Power

  • A world first: heated plasma to more than 12 million degrees Celsius (over 1 keV) using practical low-speed compression, the first of three key technical milestones for the LM26 machine.
  • Measured with the UKAEA: the industry-recognized, gold-standard Thomson scattering diagnostic recorded approximately 1.1 keV, or 12.6 million degrees Celsius, just prior to peak compression.
  • Results backed by a second instrument: absolute extreme ultraviolet (“AXUV”) diagnostic data measured approximately 1.2 keV, or 13.7 million degrees Celsius during peak compression, closely aligned with the Thomson scattering trend.
  • Ions heated too: ion temperature rose to approximately 0.46 keV, up to a twofold increase above starting ion temperature, as plasma temperature, density and magnetic field all increased as expected for a stable plasma.
  • Next up: 10 keV, roughly 100 million degrees Celsius, with upgrades to LM26 already underway.

General Fusion Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: GFUZ) reached the milestone with Magnetized Target Fusion (“MTF”), an engineering-driven approach to fusion energy.
The Company’s technology squeezes a magnetically confined plasma with a metal wall. Unlike other plasma compression approaches that use lasers or other extreme equipment to compress in microseconds or nanoseconds, General Fusion’s approach compresses in milliseconds. That lower speed is important. It means less required power, less complexity and less cost, and in General Fusion’s commercial design a liquid metal wall will protect the machine from neutrons, breed fuel, and efficiently capture heat to create steam and spin a turbine, which the Company calls the technology’s key commercialization advantages.

Built to be checked: General Fusion worked hand-in-hand with the UKAEA to design, install and commission a Thomson scattering system on LM26, and the two organizations measured electron temperature together. The result is detailed in a joint release and in a technical paper co-authored by the UKAEA, while a separate paper covers the AXUV and ion heating results. Both papers are posted on General Fusion’s website and have been submitted for peer review. “Achieving a plasma electron temperature of over 1 keV marks an important milestone for General Fusion since achieving hot electrons is a necessary step for proving fusion confinement concepts,” said Professor Dennis Whyte, CEO of the UKAEA.

“Reaching more than 1 keV on LM26, alongside confirmed ion heating and corroborating AXUV data, is an important step forward for General Fusion and a meaningful validation of the approach we have spent more than two decades developing. It shows that we are delivering against the technical roadmap we set out for LM26 and gives us greater confidence as we advance toward our next target of 10 keV, the Lawson criterion and practical and economical fusion power at commercial scale. Congratulations to our incredible team, who achieved an industry-defining result on our path to deliver cost-effective, practical fusion energy,” said Greg Twinney, Chief Executive Officer of General Fusion.

A roadmap with clear milestones: Upgrades now underway will give LM26 the higher compression ratio and plasma density needed for its second milestone, 10 keV, with General Atomics Energy Group advising on the diagnostic system for that step. The third milestone is the Lawson criterion, the combination of plasma temperature, density and confinement time that can produce net fusion energy in the plasma, which Mr. Twinney says in a blog post accompanying the announcement is targeted by the end of 2028. General Fusion is also preparing to start its commercial systems program and is working toward operating a first-of-a-kind fusion plant around 2035. “Step by step. Milestone by milestone. That’s how we get to practical and transformative fusion power,” he wrote.

General Fusion Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: GFUZ) is a fusion technology development company working to deliver economical, carbon-free fusion energy through its practical Magnetized Target Fusion technology. Its commercialization program is anchored by LM26, the world’s first commercially relevant-scale MTF demonstration machine. General Fusion is the first publicly listed fusion company and was named TIME’s No. 1 GreenTech Company of 2026. More information is available at generalfusion.com.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL)

Alphabet’s Google Quantum AI team reports its progress through peer-reviewed papers tied to a public quantum hardware roadmap. In July, Google researchers published “Reinforcement learning control of quantum error correction” in Nature, reporting a 3.5-fold improvement in logical stability, a further 20% reduction in the logical error rate, and record-low logical errors of fewer than one per thousand error correction cycles in the surface code.

That work followed Quantum Echoes, also published in Nature, which Google described as the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage and which ran 13,000 times faster on its Willow chip than the best classical algorithm on one of the world’s fastest supercomputers. Google has said it is now focused on achieving Milestone 3 on its quantum hardware roadmap, a long-lived logical qubit.

IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ)

On September 22, IonQ announced what it calls the industry’s first end-to-end real-time quantum error decoder running on a single standard CPU. The company reported that the decoder handled 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5 million quantum operations while adding only 0.02% to computation time, and it has posted the technical work on arXiv.

“Successfully validating real-time decoding across hundreds of logical qubits and over millions of logical operations is an important milestone,” said Nicolas Delfosse, Quantum Research Lead at IonQ.

Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ: RKLB)

Rocket Lab has turned a steady, public launch record on its Electron rocket into repeat business. On September 30, the company announced its largest-ever commercial Electron deal, a 20-launch contract with Synspective for missions from 2028 through 2031, bringing the Japanese radar-satellite operator to 47 contracted launches, the most of any Rocket Lab customer.

“When constellation builders want control over their destiny, they come to Rocket Lab,” said Sir Peter Beck, founder and CEO. The company reported record second quarter 2026 revenue of $234 million, up 62% year over year, and a record backlog of $2.36 billion.
